PRE SCHOOL
Our preschool curriculum is designed to meet and exceed the Indiana Early Learning
Foundations, providing a comprehensive approach to early childhood education that
supports holistic development across multiple domains.
Reading and Language Arts
At CLA, we believe that “readers are leaders.” Our literacy-rich environment encourages
children to engage with print meaningfully. Each classroom has a library area with age
appropriate books and a listening center, promoting reading comprehension, phonemic
awareness, and foundational literacy skills.
Daily reading are followed by discussions on story elements, characters, and authorship.
Emergent Readers and Sight word activities are incorporated to prepare Pre-K students
for advanced literacy development. Vocabulary growth is supported through weekly
word introductions, visual aids, word walls, and monthly featured authors. Parents are
actively involved through weekly tips and resources to reinforce reading at home.
Social and Emotional Development
Social-emotional learning is central to our program, fostering healthy relationships,
emotional expression, self-regulation, empathy, and self-confidence.
Goals include:
● Fostering Relationships: Sharing, cooperation, and collaboration with peers and adults.
● Emotional Expression: Identifying, labeling, and managing feelings constructively.
● Self-Regulation: Managing impulses and solving problems calmly.
● Empathy and Compassion: Understanding and respecting others’ feelings.
● Building Self-Confidence: Making decisions, taking responsibility, and celebrating
effort.
Structured activities, collaborative play, and guided reflections help children navigate social
interactions and contribute positively to the school community.
Science and Social Studies
Science and social studies develop curiosity, critical thinking, and understanding of the
world.
● Science: Inquiry-based exploration of weather, seasons, plants, animals, and basic
physics concepts, enhanced with hands-on experiments and digital resources.
● Social Studies: Understanding families, communities, cultures, and diversity through
themed activities, promoting awareness and citizenship.
Mathematics
Mathematics instruction aligns with Indiana standards, emphasizing counting, number
recognition, sequencing, patterning, shapes, sorting, and graphing. Manipulatives and
technology, such as interactive tools and digital resources, support hands-on learning.
Pre-K students reinforce number concepts through calendar routines and daily math
activities.
Art, Music, and Sensory Development
Creative and sensory activities support cognitive, motor, and social-emotional growth.
● Art: Drawing, painting, sculpting, and collage encourage imagination and creative
expression.
● Music: Singing, dancing, instrument play, and digital music tools enhance rhythm,
melody, language, and coordination.
● Sensory Play: Activities stimulate touch, sight, sound, smell, and taste, fostering
exploration and understanding of the environment.
Gross Motor Development
Daily opportunities for outdoor play and structured physical activities promote large muscle
development, coordination, balance, and body awareness. Children practice self-care
skills such as putting on coats and dressing for weather. Activities are adapted for indoor
play during inclement conditions.
Assessment and Special Needs
Assessment is developmentally appropriate, ongoing, and conducted in natural settings.
Child portfolios contain observational data, work samples, and standardized assessments
(e.g., ESGI). Results guide instruction and are shared with families during formal
conferences or informal meetings as needed.
For students requiring accommodation, individualized support is integrated into lesson plans,
materials, and classroom environment. Teachers may collaborate with external specialists
and follow state guidelines to ensure each child’s needs are met.
